Shopping For Christmas? Here Are A Few Dental Suggestions

The lead up to Christmas can be very busy. To help you, we’ve come up with a few tooth-friendly gift ideas!

We suspect that a good percentage of our Chelmsford dental patients will have already started to do some of their Christmas shopping, and that those who haven’t, will do so soon. There is a lot of shopping to be done for many of us, from getting a good supply of delicious Xmas food to buying festive presents, sometimes for those who are difficult to buy for.

In the rush, we can often buy things for the sake of it, perhaps giving a little less thought than what we normally would. Sometimes, these things might even pose potential issues for a healthy mouth. In today’s blog, the team at Blue Sky Dental offer a few suggestions of things that you might wish to consider buying that are either beneficial for your teeth or, at the very least, less harmful.

Christmas presents

Electric toothbrush – If you know someone who hasn’t entered the modern era and still uses a manual toothbrush, Christmas is an excellent time to introduce them to the benefits of an electric toothbrush. These are great for kids and also for people with mobility issues as the revolving bristles do at least some of the physical work needed when using a manual brush. If your budget runs to it, why not pop a pack of replacement heads in too. That might encourage them to replace the bristles before they become too worn to be effective.

Kids novelty brushes and toothpaste – It can take some time to get children into the habit of brushing their teeth well, with some doing their best to avoid it altogether. Whether they use an electric or a manual toothbrush, there is usually a good range that are available with popular cartoon characters etc that can make brushing their teeth more fun and hopefully encourage them into good oral health habits from an early age.

Sugar free treats – We almost all will over indulge in non tooth friendly treats over the festive period, especially on things like chocolate. Why not buy a few sugar free treats, perhaps from a health food shop instead? This at least offers an alternative that is healthier for teeth and may also offer a nice relief from those that are high in sugar.

Dental travel kits – If you know someone who travels away a lot, whether in this country or abroad, a travel dental kit can be a good gift. No more remembering to pack a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss. All this can be in one pack, ready to go. Especially for those who travel to more remote areas, remember to make sure to include an emergency dental repair kit for those times when accessing urgent care might be difficult.

Teeth whitening treatment – It is likely that we will see a rise in patients having their teeth whitened at Blue Sky Dental early in the new year. While some of this might be related to new year resolutions, the gift of teeth whitening is a popular present for loved ones. If you would like to provide this for a friend or family member, why not give us a call so that we can arrange this for them.

Christmas foods

Almost inevitably, we will overindulge in some quite unhealthy and potentially harmful to teeth foods over the Christmas and new year period. Below, we suggest a few alternatives that can at least offer a little relief from this.

Cheese – If you know a cheese lover, a cheese selection board can make an excellent alternative to boxes of chocolates or biscuits etc. There are a wide range to choose from with tastes to suit everyone. Cheese is also an excellent way to finish off a meal as the cheese helps to rebalance the acidity that is present after eating and therefore will help to protect your teeth.

Nuts – Nuts offer some important minerals for teeth, especially calcium. This is especially important for vegans and those that avoid dairy products due to intolerance. There is a wide selection available and you can buy them ready shelled or in their shells.

Herbal teas – Tea and coffee have a number of benefits for our health as well as being a part of the British way of life. Both of these, though, contribute to the staining of our teeth over time. Many people switch to herbal teas for this reason and for reasons of taste too. There is a wide selection to choose from and offering guests the option can be appreciated. They may also make an excellent gift if you know someone who already enjoys them.

We hope that you find the above ideas useful when it comes to preparing for Christmas. Why not also treat yourself to the gift of improved oral health too by making sure that you have an appointment for a check up booked at our Chelmsford dental clinic? We are happy to book one for you should you not have one booked already and we’re also available if you have any questions about our range of cosmetic dental treatments too. For further information or to book an appointment, you can call us today on 01245 211070.
